I agree with your decision to repair and improve an older truck. The lines on the 06 will look classic for many years to come. My 04 has only 81k miles so it is just filters and fluids for a while but I have made the commitment to toss money at it when things start to go. I can't imagine expenses any higher than depreciation losses on a new truck.
