You turn it on and the stitch will turn red as it tried to ignite and then will click off and then back on automatically until it lights. If you leave it on it will hear as needed. That was optional. The OP might have the same water heater that I have in my 2004 model. Two options that I don' have and wish that I had are...
1) auto ignition hot water heater
2) electric element heater in rooftop A/C unit for chilly nights where I've got shore power and don't want to use propane.
