2008 GMC Sierra 3500, Whata ya think?

Looking at a 2008 GMC Sierra 3500 SLT, DRW, D/A, 4x4, 90 gallon in bed aux fuel tank, B&W goose neck hitch ( I believe I can drop in a fifth wheel on the B&W), 113400 miles and meticulously maintained, garage kept, towed an 8000 lb horse trailer. Love my F350 but I feel the dually will better suit our fifth wheel especially on the interstate where the F350 gets bounced around so much it rattles your teeth. Big questions are what issues do I need to look for, any known major issues, and do those who own a similar truck like it? Thanks in advance for all your opinions and advice.

  • Come over and borrow my B&W Companion 5th wheel, and tow your trailer to the seller's place, install the 5th wheel on his B&W hitch, and take your trailer for a test flight before you buy. Then you will know...

Wait... AL and AB - farther apart on the map than the alphabet ... oh well...

A test run would tell you if it is worth changing trucks and it is easy if you can get your hands on a Companion 5th Wheel.
  • You will not regret a dually...once you pull with it. The SRWs are great, but the DRW are FANTASTIC! Now, the B&W is a VERY good hitch. I won't use another brand! They have a new one out that is an upgrade to the Companion. Easiest hitch on the market and 100% Made in the USA with American Steel. I looked for over a year for an LBZ, but found none. The '08s are amazing trucks. You will love the extra fuel. Good luck..

However the 08 is a solid truck. Emissions stuff has really not been an issues other than reduced mpg's

I may have dodged the emissions bullet this time, but sooner or later I will join the emissions crowd.
  • The truck in my signature has been the best truck I have ever owned, it now has 49K miles on it. I was like a lot of the people you see with new trucks in their signature all the time, I bought new every 3 years. I still can't find a reason to let this truck go. I will buy a new Silverado when the 15's hit the lots, but my truck is perfect. I have a Tahoe that is my daily driver, and my office is walking distance from my house. My truck will set weeks at a time in my garage, tough on batteries, but easy on the rest of the truck. I also have a GMC with an LMM, it has 145,000 work miles on it, perfect as well.
  • Only common issue is transmission cooler lines leaking. After market has kits with a permanent fix. My 09 duramax Allison has been bullet proof. Love to tow with it.
  • I drive an 08 2500HD CC 4X4. I have had since new and its never missed a day of work due to a break down in 86K miles. My personal 06 LBZ cant say that. I am sure at some point the DPF will need some attention but so far its been trouble free. Pretty tough to find issue with the pickup. The most common complaint of the 07-10 Duramax trucks is mileage. This truck gets 13 mpg in mixed driving. It gets 17.5 or so over the road.
  • I love my 07 1/2 new body style. Pulls like a horse and rides like a caddy. I also have an in bed fuel/tool box. Essentially the same truck you are looking at.

  • The B&W turnover ball goose neck should have a release handle in the drivers side wheel well just ahead of the duals. Pull and twist the handle toward the front and it will latch the pin so the goose neck ball can be removed. Drop in the B&W Companion and latch the pin tighten a bolt to 40 ft lbs then 4 nuts to 80 ft lbs and roll.
  • Can't speak for the 08's but I have a 2006 2500HD D/A and love it. Bought it with 140,000 miles and now have 150,000. Great combo the Duramax/Allison. Good luck.
