2010-2012 Ram 3500 tune settings

For those of you with a 10-12 Cummins, and EFI-Live, with the csp-5, which tune are you using when you tow? Position 1 is +20 hp stock tune, position 2 is +50 hp tow tune, and position 3 is the +90 hp street tune. Don’t want to use positions 4 or 5. Just curious what other people are using and how your results are. Not trying to start a discussion on tuning or not, just interested in what people that have tuned are seeing. Thanks
  • Twist the dial until your trans or egts can't handle it!
I wouldn't run more than 30-50 hp max on a stock trans if you're actually putting all the power to the ground.
  • Yeah this forum is mostly populated by the new-under-warranty and completely-stock crowd.
I’d just say watch your pyrometer (EGT), that’s what will tell you if you’re fueling too hard or not.
If your EGT is too hot, that means you need a bigger (or 2nd) turbo!!
Or you can wimp out and turn the fuel down... :)
  • I would not tow with the street tune, that's meant for a quick burst of power for a short race... Tow with the 20 hp tune or just the tow tune and watch the temps due to timing advance. Hope this helps.

You'll probably get a bunch of flak here and I'm not sure how much response you'll get. Might want to post your question on one of the Cummins forums.

OTOH, I've had the same questions about using my Smarty Jr. Not sure what's best either!

Agreed that this isn't the place to ask for advice on modding your truck. I am surprised this post has lasted this long without all the internet nannies. You might try CumminsForum.com, or TDR. There are some good Facebook groups as well (at least there are a couple local in my area).

I have thought about tuning my 2012 since it is out of warranty, but the emissions issues are mainly what is holding me back since I live in an area that does emissions testing.

Scott, when I had my 03, I ran almost exclusively on SW2.

    Thanks!
I used to run SW3 with a lighter TT but now we have one that weighs about 1k# more (9K) and I've since installed 50 HP injectors. So I've been running it on timing only and it tows fine. I do wonder if there's more or less timing on SW2 and 3. No one seems to know.

This is going back a number of years, but there was a sponsor on Cummins Forum (Bob something) that really knew the Smarty. I would guess he could answer that question.

I felt like I had a pretty good understanding of the tuner back when I had my 03. But that was 7ish years ago now.
