2010 Toyota Sequoia towing capabilities

Can someone help me? I am new to this whole trailer thing. We have a 2010 Sequoia. We are wanting to get a Forest River hybrid 233s. Here are the specs for it.
GVW: 6,780
Dry Weight: 4,670
Payload Capacity: 1,870
Hitch Weight: 590

We have 5 kids so we would be towing with 7 passengers in the vehicle. Can we tow this trailer with our sequoia? We would use a Equalizer hitch.

I feel like I am trying to learn a foreign language trying to figure this all out.

Here is our door jam sticker with specs...
  • That "tow rating" assumes you don't put anything else in the vehicle and you have the full payload rating.. Which you are giving up #600 right off the bat, since you only have a sticker that says #1200..

So forget about the "tow rating"... You aint' gonna get even close to that if you want to stay under payload/GVWR on your Sequoia.

You will likely start shopping for trailers looking at their 'dry weight' too... Forget that as well... ;)

Yes, you have a lot to learn and it doesn't help to be learning in this day and age... Too many ratings and too many lawyers and too many opinions!

You are going to get more confused before you even begin to "learn" anything because of the "internet", but that's just the way it is these days..

My suggestion would be to get a trailer with a GVWR of no more than #6000 and pack light.. ;)

    Good luck!

  • My advise, 7 passengers in a half ton whatever. No camper is made that can handle the 7 of them and be within its limits. Another growing pain of having a large family.

You could possibly go with forest river rockwood roo 183 GVW 4820 lbs . 3 queen beds and a dinette. Not sure about the clothes, towels, or food storage on it.
It has no couch or slide, and you would only be sleeping in it.

I have a camper rated for 6 and can only handle a family of 4's requirements. No slide, or room to move around 90lb lab.
  • I have a Sequoia with the tow package and air leveling suspension. The motor and transmission aren't the problem. It has a 4.3 rear end tied to a torquey (for gas) motor.

Like others have said, your truck payload will be the issue. If your kids are small, you might be able to squeeze it out IF you kept your tounge weight down to 10-12% (by loading the rear of the trailer), but you are looking at lots of effort to effectively manage everything....and it won't work long as your kids grow (they would have to all average 50lbs or less to even make it work now). If you have twins and young kids and are looking to make it work for a season or two it might be okay, but you wouldn't be able to haul much.

Problem is there isn't much out there that can handle 7 people (and all their stuff) and tow any kind of load. A 3/4 ton suburban (which they don't make anymore).

It depends on your trip length. If you had your wife drive a separate car you could do alright with the Sequoia.
