Depending on trailer weight, a brake controller is more than just recommended, it's the law, there's some states where if it's over 1000# trailer brakes are REQUIRED to operate on their roads. I don't think anyone ever regretted being able to stop better, so there's really no down side to getting a brake controller, lol
