2011 Ram 2500 Mega towing capabilities

My brother tows a 2004 - 34' Montana 5er with this Cummings truck. He previously had an 04' Ram that was identical other than being a quad cab 5.9 verses mega cab 6.7. This truck sags more in the rear than the 04' (pulling same 5er)& he informed me he was adding Firestone airbags. This problem won't impact me because my 5er is lighter & my truck is a quad cab but I do have some concerns. Anyone else experience a newer truck with higher tow capability actually sagging more?

For some reason the megacab up until this year had a lower gross weight rating and payload capacities than the quad cab. I suspect that is the sag difference you are experiencing.
  • The weight of the cab is the difference. The quad cab long bed and the mega cab short bed have the same overall length and wheelbase. Since the mega can only come with a short bed, you either need to have a slide fifth wheel hitch or mount it further back than you would in a long bed. The added weight of the cab and the location of the hitch will affect the way the pin weight will be carried.

Were they both 2500's. RAM has been changing things around with 3500 rear springs and maybe 2500's also. Trying to compare trucks that are several years(Gens) apart is apples and oranges in a lot of cases.

  • Megacab diesel 3/4 ton payload is under 2000 pounds. It's a heavy truck for 3/4 ton springs.
  • The Megacabs have softer springs than the quad cab - at least the 3500s of my generation they did. That may not be the case with the newer 2500s.
  • Thanks for the responses. I guess it must be a combination of mega cab & maybe the springs are softer on the 2011 verses the 2004. I thought someone else may have gone through the same issue. I will pass on the info to bro. My 1st diesel is great for my 5er & I really love the truck. That doesn't stop me from wishing I had purchased a 1 ton SRW when I start drooling over new 5ers.
