So you say the Air Pump issue isn't as nearly as bad as it appears on the internet. It happened to me when I had 2,000 miles on my new Tundra. I actually crawled for 15 miles at 20 miles per hour to the dealer. I was just glad I was not on my 300 mile camping trip towing my 7000lb TT.
Ford 6.0 or 6.4 diesel dumping coolant would have left you stranded.
Cummins with a dowel pin failure would have left you stranded.
Duramax can crack a piston and leave you stranded.
Its annoying when your vehicle goes into limp mode. I've been there. My point is that in the unlucky event that the OP has an AIP issue, it isn't catastrophic and is covered under warranty. Its annoying when it happens, but it doesn't cause damage to the engine and you can continue to drive.
Given the options, I would rather have a low probability minor inconvenience covered by a free extended warranty (10 year/150K miles)than an expensive/catastrophic engine failure that leaves me stranded and out thousands of dollars in repairs. I agree, limp mode sucks and is frustrating. I'd rather putt along at 40 mph for a while and be able to safely get off the road than have my engine blow up and leave me where ever I roll to a stop. Its not perfect, but its not something that would make me abandon the Toyota like you did.
I haven't been able to find any documentation stating that every single Tundra made from day one has a 10y/150K warranty regarding this issue. I would be most interested in having this information to use as a negotiation tool with the dealer....but what happens at mile 150,001?
