These motors have been known to have cam phaser problems and timing chain stretching, which can affect performance.
Your problem sounds like a camshaft position sensor problem, which could be related to the cam phasers. The intermittent nature of it reminds me of a problem my dad has with a couple of different cars (not F150s). They all had camshaft sensor or camp phaser problems. He had intermittent startups which varied in time.
As for shutting off, it may be doing it to avoid engine damage if all that stuff is out of wack.
By the way, your mechanic or dealer is completely worthless. Find a better one. I call it as I see it.
