Not trying to split hairs here but I'm not sure what you mean by proper gearing; even the 18-speeds are OD in the top gear or 2. An 18-speed running in 18th is not much different than a 1-ton pickup with a 6-speed running in 6th. (example- Eaton-Fuller AutoShift 18-speed's top 2 gears are 0.86 and 0.73)
