FWIW I drive my 2012 GMC Duramax 2.5mi to work everyday and have not had any emissions related issues. Regens can be interrupted and start up again without any problems.
I will however be deleting emissions in the near future and picking up additional MPG.
My previous truck was the same config but with the GM 6.0 gasser and towing experience is night/day difference when pulling hills (I live out West) or hitting heavy headwinds. Just set the cruise and forget about it... With the 6.0 I was always fighting to keep my speed up and anticipate upcoming hills. Its amazing how much more you can focus on the road and actually relax and have a converstaion when your not worried about holding speed. For me that is worthe the extra cost of the diesel. THat is a choice I made, but agree may not be for everyone. As far as maintenance and related costs there really is not that much of a difference from my perspective. A few more quarts of oil each change and DEF only needs to be refilled every 5-6K miles at a costs of ~$15-20. Diesel fuel in my area is on-par with 89 octane which I needed in my old gasser when towing but the Diesel gets ~20% better mileage overall which tends to wipe out any addtional maintenance costs. The extended range between fillups is also nice. I could only go about 230-240 mi towing with my old truck vs ~400mi with the new one. Larger tank and better towing mileage...
