I am not a Ford fan boy but no one should be concerned about Direct Injection nor Turbo changed engines today.
Every OEM using DI has had problems and of course the ave been turbo charging problems.
The 3.5L Ecoboost alone sold over 1 million units 2 years ago and we read of how many failures and problems? Percentage wise...would it even equate to 1%?
DI engines. Jeez. Way over 1 million across how many OEM's? Yeah, there have been problems. But again, what are the statistics? DI engines continue to come out in mass volumes. (With exception to Toyota V8's, which does say something.)
But seriously, there is no reason to steer anyone away from a DI and/or Turbo engine for towing. None at all.
You dont know the percentages (neither do I) but how many are sold has little to do with it since the problem only arises on very high mileage trucks. In those cases the incident rate is much higher according to everything I have read. Someone claiming the problem isn't "major" without data is of no help at all.
It's posts like those here that cause me to tell readers to do their own research. There's so much ego involved in some peoples posts that their just not to be taken serious.
BTW, DI isn't anything new. I have a mag form the middle 60's that talks about it but describes the down side of carbon build up and the whole concept it isn't viable because of it. They certainly didn't use EGR either.
