2014 Dodge Durango Towing abilities

I need help figuring out if a 2014 RWD Dodge Durango Limited (or R/T) 5.7L V8 Hemi with a tow package (rated to tow 7400 pounds) can tow a Lance 2285 27' trailer (or equivalent). Trailer dry weight is 4150 pounds (add to that a couple hundred for options) - GVWR is 6000 pounds. The kicker is....some times I will have 4 adults and 2 kids in the Durango -- total passenger weight around 750 pounds. I've been told by the LANCE and the Dodge Dealer that I should not have a problem. But I would love to hear from anyone who isn't trying to sell me something. At this point I'm wide open. I LOVE the Durango - I could (but I don't want to) get a smaller trailer OR I could (but don't want to) get a full size SUV (Tahoe/Yukon/Expedition). :) But if there is concern AT ALL with the ability of the Durango to tow a 6000 pound trailer with 6 passengers -- I will explore other options. I live in Colorado and will be heading over the Rockies. I need to be confident in my tow vehicle. Thanks all!

  • The limitation for the Durango is payload. If you have 750 pounds of people and maybe 700 pounds of tongue weight. Does the Durango have 1200 pounds of payload or 1500? A full sized half ton is not much different. So as you shop and test drive, take a look at this sticker on the driver's door. Note what each has where mine says 2051. This is as equipped payload, so a loaded up Citadel will have less than an Express.
