2014 Gas Ram 2500 5.7 or 6.4?

FInally decided to buy a RAM after testing other brands over the last two weekends.

Crew Cab 4x4
Towing Capacity:
5.7 11340 with axle ratio of 3.73
5.7 13340 lbs with axle ratio of 4.10 400 lbs oftorque
6.4 15760 with axle ratio of 4.10 429 lbs of torque
6.4 12760 lbs with axle ratio of 3,73

The questions are:
1)If I am towing a 9900 lb trailer, does it really matter?
2)One Ram dealer sells all trucks 20% below MSRP. Good deal or has anyone ever got a better deal at a Car and Truck SHow? CLeveland has one in around a month.

The ride felt tighter and the seats were more comfortable in the 2500
    over the 250.
  • All things the same, there is no replacement for displacement...

If its true that the 6.4 can get better mileage unloaded due to cylinder deactivation, I would hop on that 6.4 in a heartbeat. I know what a monster that 5.7 Hemi is, the 6.4 can only be better!

How often are you towing ? Will it be your every day veh ? If so, how far are you driving every day?

My dream is to begin traveling as much as I can once I retire (within a year). That's why I am looking to buy new. Normally it would not be a daily driver.
  • I've test driven both the 5.7 and 6.4 within the past week. No question for me that if I go Ram it will be the 6.4. The 5.7 just had to pull higher RPMs to get on the freeway, empty. There was a definite difference in low end torque with the 6.4. Most of my dealers around here (No. Cal), seem to be 1% below dealer invoice plus factory customer incentives ($3000 until Feb.)

  • What I was told by a dealer, doesn't matter if it's RV, Car, Spa, Home Improvement "shows" in general, that they have to hike up the price a little to cover the cost of going to the show.
  • 1. Go 6.4L w/4.10s and don't look back. It would leave room to grow.
    2. I'm thinking 20% is pretty good, but it's been 13 years since I bought a truck.
  • Get the 6.4L according to the Ram guys, because it has MDS, it actually gets better mpg than the same truck with a 5.7L (+13% IIRC).
