There was an article a while ago where a 3rd gen Ram/Cummins was tested with about 7 aftermarket air intakes. All made within 1 hp of stock on a chassis dyno. You do lighten your wallet and add more noise from, and dirt to, your engine by buying a "cold air intake" though, so there's that.
And I personally seen dyno pulls showing 5-15 hp gains but more importantly better sustained temps. Not all intake and filtration systems are the same though.
Although, those that change their air filter every oil change(like a certain Cummins owner here says he does) probably allows more dirt in their engine then many intakes. We found this out many years ago when I worked in the dyno test cells at Cummins testing different customer intakes and filtration systems. You are suppose to keep the opening and closing of the filtration system at a minimum because you introduce more contaminates during this time than any other. Purchasing a filter that extends these intervals as long as possible without sacrificing efficiency is ideal .

"This fact encourages more frequent filter service and leads to the problems associated with too frequent opening and closing of the air filtration system. Utilizing the maximum life of the air filter is your best practice for gaining the maximum, cost-effective engine/equipment protection.
If I am able to get a link to the study showing what too frequent air filter changes does then I will post it, but it might still be an internal only article.
You are right, I am dusting my engine! Silicon is at a very normal level considering the average oil change is 6K and my mileage is 2.5 times that.
Yes I do change my filter at 15K instead of 20 since it's easy to do ALL filters and out change at one time, my money and my method and proof below says it's just fine.
Also the report is with towing 1/2 of those miles at 33-35K.
