I think all 1500's going forward come with an 8 speed now. Tow Haul will mean that the engine will be revved more so that it will have more power on tap. This means a little more fuel consumption, but less wear and tear on the driveline constantly hunting back and forth between gears. The trucks had these algorithms programmed into them for optimum performance and longevity. Chances are, the engine was braking hard and not really consuming much fuel at that point. It's providing a vacuum which is how gas engines provide engine braking. Don't sweat it.
