We have owned a diesel since 2003 and if we were to buy a new truck it would be a gasser. The towing experience with a diesel is fine but the new gas V-8's have more HP and close to the same torque as our 5.9 Dodge(235 hp and 460 pounds of torque).
It is our personal experience that diesels are more expensive. Several years ago we were out of state and our turbo bite the dust. We had to use a Dodge dealer and it cost us $4000. Also due to the extra weight of the motor and trans you wear out tires faster then a gas V-8 does.
If you are towing heavy and often then a diesel is hands down the way to go. However if you tow within the weight rating of your gas truck then they will do the job for less money. As far as re-sale goes that doesn't matter because we keep our trucks for a minimum of 15 years.
