Not to hijack this thread but what about the two fuel filters? How often do you change them and at what cost? What does it cost to change them yourself vs having the dealer change them? I would like to get a diesel but am on the fence between the diesel up charge and the additional maintenance cost. I realize money can be saved by doing it yourself if a person is so inclined. Thanks!
I'll give a direct answer. A filter kit is usually between 80 and 110 bucks. These are changed every 15,000 miles.
Maintenance wise, I'm spending roughly 140 more bucks a year in typical maintenance over my 2010 Ford F-150. Basically, it's the diesel fuel filters and the cost for 1 extra jug of oil per oil change roughly.
Now, the dealer will want about 300 to 400 bucks to change both fuel filters. That's a tough pill for me to swallow when it's just 2 simple filters to change. I can't see how they justify the 200 to 300 dollar mark-up for a job that should take 1 hour at most. So personally I see 200 dollars as a reasonable cost for a dealership to do the job. Gives them 1 hour to change both filters at 100 bucks an hour.
