Ram builds their HD trucks to haul heavy loads with. The other two can't hang with Ram in the HD department so they are trying to take their LD trucks and build them heavier to claim that market. Ram is staying with the drive around town in comfort and go to the grocery or the lumber store market. Ram buyers that want to haul and tow heavy buy a truck fitted for that.

1500 = family truck capable of light hauling needs
2500 = family truck capable of medium hauling needs
3500 = family truck capable of heavy hauling needs

I had made a call to a RAM dealer asking for the sticker payload on a 1500 Laramie. They came back with 1250. I declined. Next day someone calls me back claiming RAM has the highest payload in the industry, that the payload is for the bed only and not passengers, and that everyone else was lying to me. I politely told him we are not buying a RAM at this time and he just hung up on me.

Regular Cab, 4x2, HD Payload with 5L V8 and 18" wheels.

As for the frame, the HD Payload trucks have a thicker, stronger frame than the others. But Ford says it's using new "high strength" steel so weight of the frame can be reduced from earlier models.

Here's the HD Payload frame dimensions for 2012 and 2015:

Frame for 2015 HD Payload: 9.06" x 3.58" x .11"
Frame for 2012 HD Payload: 8.86" x 2.95" x .15"

Isn't the max. payload in a 2015 F150 3300 lbs (and 12,200 lbs tow cap.)? If so, what does it take to get that? I think I read somewhere that Ford also reduced the strength of the frame and amount of material used in it somewhat to take advantage of the lower GVWR from using aluminum.

It seems like the line between a 1/2 and 3/4 T truck is blurred more than ever now. If the new F150 is available with 3300 lb payload cap., why buy a 3/4T if you can get an F150 with more payload than some 3/4 T trucks? Is there something about a 3/4T that is inherently better like a stronger frame and bigger brakes?

I wonder if and when Ford will build the F250 with aluminum? Personally I am highly skeptical of the aluminum bodied F150 for a number of reasons and will take a steel body any day, even if it meant switching to another brand.

My FX2 is ~2030# payload, you must have had some heavy options. Prolly a SCrew; mine is a SCab.

And am looking forward to seeing some 2015 F150 HD Payload trucks in the wild, as the published specs in the 2015 Source Book don't make a lot of sense to me.

The GVWR has dropped to 7850# in the HD Payload trucks with 18" HD 6-lug wheels, but they've kept the 4800# rear GAWR, same as the 2011-2014 HD Payload trucks with 7-lug wheels/axle.

But, while the 7-lug wheel's weight rating was 2400#, matching the 4800# rear GAWR, the 18" HD 6-lug wheel's weight rating is only 2101#. :h

Maybe a misprint ... the tech spec (2015 Source Book) I'm reading from is from Sept 2014 and clearly says that it's "current info" and "subject to change".

I got lucky and found my Max Tow ON THE LOT sitting in the back with the used vehicles.. It's a 2013 and it was January 2014, so there was about 8 or so other 2013's back there too. But, mine was the only Max Tow.. :)

It was exactly as I would have ordered it too. It's got #1920 on the payload sticker.. ;)

Robert, I was looking at a similar truck in 2011, Supercrew 4WD 5.5' bed Max tow package. It is a good truck, but my wife wanted 3 rows of seats.

Seems the fake half ton is no more...it used to have a 8.2K GVWR, a

6K RGAWR

7 lug (GM's have 8) and F150HD badging...there was a poster on another
thread who wanted the higher payload/cargo rating...but not the 7 lug

'normal' people used for these ratings is a 150 lb person...haven't weighed that
since high school... :)

:) Hi, a Max Tow Package was hard enough to find and the Max tow is enough for me. I think to get the Max Payload, (if they could find one) I would have to get the longer bed. I originally wanted the longer bed, but it was too long for my garage and driveway. So I'm glad that I didn't get the longer bed.

The Max payload has three things that I don't want. (1.) The longer bed. (2.) Seven lug wheels. (3.) Two piece drive shaft.

And maybe too harsh of a ride, especially while empty.

With the max payload pkg could have gotten a lot more payload but not bad for a 1/2 ton CC 4x4
