You are correct. The price of trucks are outrageous. Trying to get lesser and by the time you add things that are needed and wanted you might as well stepped up to the Lariat from the XLT. My stomach is still churning from this transaction. We both know that it will be nice to have more stability and power than we were used to in our old truck. We could have put higher weight bearing tires and wheels on our old truck but the sticker gross weight is still 8800 pounds and we decided that we would rather be legal and not worrying about it all of the time.

Thank you all for your responses. After an entire day of looking closely at each of the brands, pro, and cons we ended up buying a 2015 F350 CC DRW Lariat 4WD long bed diesel. We get it sometime next week and are excited. Picking the exterior color was hard but ended up getting caribou. I don't think you could go wrong with any of the brands but for us, the Ford was more comfortable inside and that is an important part. It will be quite an upgrade from our 1990 F250.

The Truck is a 2013 F350 4x4 DRW CC 6.2L 4.3 in Lariat trim carrying an AF 1150. The truck has a GVWR of 14,000 and the one time I weighed the truck and camper with full tanks and loaded for travel it came in at 13,700 pounds.

"MPG: For the whole trip I averaged 9.1 mpg. Big deal here is speed and wind (not really mountain passes. For those you get poor mileage up but make it up going down). For my rig 63 - 65 mph seems to be the sweet spot in that I get decent gas mileage with decent speed. Above 65 the mileage drops pretty fast. I think I was getting 7.5 at 80 mph. At 40 - 45 (construction zones) I was getting great mileage but that is too slow. Not surprisingly wind can make a huge difference. For part of the trip we were getting 30 mph winds with 40+ mph gusts. Cruising with that wind largely at our back I was getting 12.5 mpg. Fighting the wind I was in the 7's at 65 mph."

Probably not much help but.... Our 04 Duramax 3500 3.73 long bed DRW 4x4 with camper loaded weighs in at 12,000 +- 100# averages 15 most of the time and that's whatever the speed limit is. Major side wind or head wind reduces our speed and mileage to 13-14. Those are town and highway mpg. We've not hauled a trailer with this yet but expect a drop even further. Will see when new car trailer arrives and we tow the FJ Cruiser a while. Don't figure the tandem axel one horse trailer will make as much difference since it tucks in behind everything and weight is much less. Horse fat but not THAT heavy! Seems like the newer diesels aren't competing well with our Oldie but goodie. I had an 09 3/4 ton same as the dually that got 23 regular empty and 18 pulling 3 horse slant with 10'short wall. People that got that set up got a bargain! If we were to buy another truck I think we'd try a Dodge if not a Chevy, but that's just us. Our kids have 3 Dodges, 1 each, and are passed with them. One was a dyed in the wool Ford person and had said they not go back. Two are gas, one is diesel. They are all new models 2014 and 2015.

2013 Ford F-350 DRW 4x4 crew cab long bed, 3.73 gears, carrying 14,350 total with Northstar Igloo in the bed.

I averaged 11.7 mpg with the 6.7 diesel during a 11,000 mile trip to Alaska.
I tend to push the speed- so more 70mph than 60. In northern Utah where the highway speed limit is 85 I set the cruise control at 95 and it the short term mileage was still above 11.

I added a 14x7 dual axle trailer pulling maybe 5000 lb. and the mileage over 600 miles was 11.4mpg.

Running empty around town about 13mpg

highway empty 15mpg.

In July of 2013, we took a trip from Louisiana to Yellowstone then back through Mount Rushmore to home. Total miles was 3981. Average MPG for the whole trip was 10.34. Everything was loaded with full water and four extra 5 gallon fuel cans with 2 honda 2000's on a front carrier hitch.

I've given up trying to answer that question: "What kind of mileage do you get?"
"It depends" is the answer.

With camper on, no apparent wind, moderately level terrain:
65 mph: 13.5 mpg
70 mph: 10.5 mpg

No camper:
Non-freeway streets: 15 mpg (in southern Arizona)
Non-freeway streets: 11.6 to 12 (in south Puget Sound)
(There is a huge difference in topography and speed limits.)

Recent 1,400 south-to-north mile trip with camper on and towing a small enclosed trailer: 11.3 mpg
This includes lots of desert, mountain ranges, headwinds, tailwinds etc.

Truck & camper: 15K pounds.
4-wheel drive. 3.73 axle CC diesel dually long bed.
