Robert, I'm sure most of the US trucks could handle similar loads as the overseas trucks. The issue is that in America, we have a very litigous happy society so the ratings are extremely conservative to protect a corporate entity should anything go wrong. With my F-150, I did haul over 2,000 lbs of rock with it along with the wife and I, had the tires for it. Probably took the axle to its limit payload wise. Nothing happened, but the truck did feel heavy. If anything did go wrong, it would all be on me because Ford rated the vehicle well below its ultimate capacity.
The litigous happy environment and people too dumb to know how to drive a vehicle when it's close to the edge in any capacity probably encourages companies to be much more conservative with their payload ratings on their trucks.
