Like others have said, a longer test may have provided better precision and accuracy. But they did the best they could to provide identical testing conditions. If they could repeat the same exact test several times and average the results that give more confidence in their testing procedure.
I can beleive the Ford only got 12 mpg. In my second job we just had a new F350 dually 4x4 crewcab diesel delivered. The lie-o-meter indicated 13.1 mpg when they dropped it off. It came from eastern Washington to Tacoma, so it was highway driving up and over a mountain range.
