2015 Silverado opinions

OP here. Just got back from around a 5k trip to Sedona/Colorado/NM trip thru dust, dirt, dry, high, wet, cold, waaaaayyyy up and then back down. Our old 2004 Silverado started with 247k miles and performed like a champ the whole trip. Disclaimer... we did drop a new engine in 2011 at 189k...but still.

Just pulled in last night so truck is dirty and in going in for the post trip Oil/lube/filter change.

tomman58... your new truck sounds great. I'd love to have that. Guess I'll have to check into financing and incentives.

First, I've always bought American trucks and mostly of the GM brand.
Second the 2015 (see sig) is really like no other we owned. We had a 2008 prior to this truck. This truck is more than you are looking for but the creature features are the same no matter what LTZ you get and they are fun and exciting. We love the USB ability of the radio and use mostly our own music and audio books. I have 20,000 on my 15' and have had no issues other than a couple goofy recalls (GM , I feel is over reactive now).
I also have the lane change sensor, the front and rear sensors and the air brake. We travel in comfort and safety.

Hybridhunter, I can't seem to find this Pistonslap.com you refer to. The last GM 6.0l I heard with piston slap was a 2002. Correct me if I am wrong but this only applied to the 6.0l and while it is noisy on start up once warm it goes away and causes no problems.

The OP is looking at Silverado 1500s which don't even come with the 6.0.

Guess I should search before I speak, I did find mention of piston slap in the 5.3l, guess I am fortunate to not have this issue with mine. Almost to 140k and still nice and quiet.

That said, I hate Toyota's, after owning 5, they are all vehicles that were sub-par, from brand new, and dealing with Toyota is no treat on a good day. That said, the Tundra, though ugly, not terribly refined, and thirsty on fuel is a better bet between the 2.

I've had a number of GM's, all brand new work rigs, and I am appalled that anyone other than fleets used to purchase them. That said the newer ones are better, but the cost cutting measures that lead to the piston slap issue are pervasive at GM. (think ignition defect etc)

I just wouldn't own another Toyotat because in my experience they do not hold a candle to any Ford I've owned. Consumer reports disagrees. but after filling out 2 bad vehicle reports for my Toyotas, I got cut off from the annual vehicle survery, so draw your own conclusions (10 year subscriber btw, to this day). But I don't keep my stuff past 5 years, and I tend to be very hard on things. (And equally fastidious about maintenance>)

Ditto on the trucks being the better deal. Everytime I think I might want a Tahoe... I compare the price between it and a truck. That takes care of that craving.

When we were looking at new 3500HD silverados a few weeks ago we also looked at some new Tahoes and Suburbans. They were in the $60k to $70k range. Unbelievable how expensive those are. The crew dab 3500HD 4x4 we looked at and drove was $46k. The truck seemed like a better deal.

I would go for the 4x4, you will get the money back when it's time to sell, it will be easier to sell, and you got to use it free the whole time you owned it.

Update on my previous post. Returned home for a total of about 8 hrs non-towing drive time. Averaged 21.9 mpg. Makes me happy with my selection of tow vehicle. Tows well & great mileage when not towing.

Mileage changes so much with driving conditions that numbers posted here are often difficult to believe. A new v8 half ton truck driven across the country empty at posted speed limits will average around 18 to 20 mph. Some legs will be better, but winds, inclines and traffic will keep the average lower than expected This will be the case with a Ford, Ram or GM. At the same time a Tahoe or Expedition will be about the same, perhaps a bit less. A three row seat SUV, traverse or Explorer may get you as much as 23 or 24 for the same trip, but may prove to be less useful for various duties.

I really appreciate all the info! DH is now convinced that a 1500 crew cab is the way to go. We really did want to go to an SUV but just couldn't justify the expense (vs truck) and amenities. It seems that trucks (due to size) are going to be the most comfortable seat options.
