2016 F-250 with a 6.2

The 5th wheel tow rating on this truck is 12,500 with the 3.73 rear and 4x4. I currently have a 2009 Wildcat 32 QBBS that has a dry weight under 9,000 and a GVRW of 11,660. I'm looking to down size to a TT around 26'. My question is how would this truck do pulling the 5th until I downsize? I have had enough of my 2006 6.0 and don't want to do diesel again if I don't have to. I live in south Jersey and most of my trips are on flat roads except for a yearly trip to Lake George NY.

    Engine should be OK, 6.2 is a pretty darn strong engine, so much that Ford went a bit heavy handed on the torque management system which makes it a bit slow off the line at a dead stop.. Otherwise a pretty cool engine.

    BUT, before you commit to the vehicle of choice, you really need to check the available cargo weight of that truck..

    The configuration of the truck can affect the cargo weight.. A LOT..

    Your 5th at 9K "dry" should have a pin weight of 1800lbs (20%).. If you load 800 lbs in the trailer plus the dry weight is typically low you could be at 10,500 lbs with a pin weight of 2,100 lbs..

    Your 5th hitch in the bed will take about 200 lbs, putting you at 2,300 lbs..

    My 2013 F250 XLT 4x2 super cab short bed has 3415 lbs for cargo.. In your case 4x4 will take about 600 lbs off that putting you around 2815 lbs.. Then if you go with crew cab, long bed and Platinum package you might find yourself around 2,400 lbs of cargo.. Putting you close to the point of having to count how many potato chips you can take with you..

    My point is don't believe the it can tow 12,500 lbs marketing hype.. Read the fine print of the Ford Towing guides..

    That 12,500 lbs tow rating typically is if you get 4x2 with reg cab, XL package.. In other words a stripped down truck..

    Additionally my 2013 rear springs drop.. A LOT.. You may wish to check for the CAMPER package which I believe should have the spring overloads.. I didn't get the camper package and I didn't get the overloads.. I wish I did..

    Ford changed that and I didn't realize it when I ordered mine.. Our 2006 and even 2003 F250s had the overloads..
  • Should have no issues, just turn higher rpm at times. Don't be afraid to let it rev when it needs to...the 6.2 Boss is a great engine.
  • Also forgot to mention that the new 6 speed vs the old 5 speed transmission is awesome.
  • I have a 34 foot gooseneck horse trailer with living quarters that weighs approx. 14,000 lbs that I pull with a 2013 F350 Dually CC with 6.2 engine and 4.30 rear end. Truck pulls this trailer with no problems - traded a 2006 6.0PSD F250 for the 6.2 gas engine with no regrets - I pulled the above trailer with both trucks and both pulled it equally well- you just have to learn to keep the gas engine in the higher rpm ranges. I had to order my F350 DRW as I wanted a 2wd with 4.30 gears with a gas engine - odds of finding that combination on a dealer lot is slim to none. If you're not ever going to tow a heavier trailer than what you have now, the 3.73 gears will probably be fine. The 4.30 gears are awesome and only hurt the mpg about 1 mpg. I believe you will be very impressed with the 6.2 engine. Mileage towing above trailer at posted speed limits is between 8 and 9 mpg. Empty is around 14 to 15 highway at posted speed limits.   • I don't think it would struggle, especially in your neck of the woods.
  • Should do this fine. It has more HP than your current truck, it'll just need to spin up to a higher RPM to make that HP.
