2016 half ton IIHS crash testing small overlap

article and video

Surprising difference across the different brands (and cab choice). Interesting material if you are in the market and safety is high on your list.

Odd crash test: "small overlap front crash"

I love my Fords, but what is with all these individual crash tests? Sometimes it seems like they are tailoring the crash tests to get the results they want. What about taking results from all the different tests and averaging them? Front, rear, 1/2 front, sideswipe, the small overlap test in the original post, etc.

Are averaged results of all crash tests available somewhere?

What happens is the Manufactures get quite adept at keeping the occupants safe. So then the testing agencies find new ways of challenging the structure of the vehicle, hents the small overlap. It is not an easy test to do well on, as all the force is applied outside of the frame rails.

Individual crash tests are the best way to determine the likelihood of injury to occupants of the vehicle in a controlled, repeatable environment. If you want them combined, you can go to IIHS or NHTSA and read, they have the results from each vehicle they've tested.

Agreed on all points. Glad you enjoyed.
  • I was also very critical of Ford for the Extended cab's poor performance and missing safety equipment last year. Credit to them for going above and beyond with the fixes in the new model year.

I hope the other brands can match that performance on their next new models.

  • Interesting how some makers will attack the test if they have trouble passing!
