2016 Ram 3500. Issues?

Hi All,

I'm thinking about looking at this truck:

2016 Ram 3500

I know it has a few outstanding recalls, water pump, transmission interlock, and a tailgate latch problem. Other than that, is the 2016 a good year for emission issues? Other problems?

The price is OK, but on the high side according to KBB. I'm not sure how much they are willing to deal yet.

The truck is a 1.5 hour drive so if there are known problems with this year I'll pass.

Thankk, Drew

  • Thanks everyone.

To answer one question it does not have the Aisin transmission. I know the price is high, so I was thinking to offer $45K and see what they say.

As for going to Idaho, I know I could get what I want for maybe $56K, but I don't know how much it would cost to get the truck back to Massachusetts. I can't take the time to fly out and drive it back. And then there is the sales tax and excise tax difference to factor in as compared to the 2 year old truck.
  • I have a 2014 2500 and it's been a fantastic truck. I have had all the recalls done, which admittedly is a little annoying but it was all free work so I can't complain really. One recall even included a completely new DPF/DEF catalyst system which had to be really expensive. Again, free so I didn't worry about it.

In 3 years of ownership I have had a check engine light once. It was for an 'Insufficient Catalyst' and occurred not long after I had filled my DEF tank with cheap stuff from a farm store. When I got home from that trip I drained the tank and refilled with Peak Blue DEF and have never had another problem since. Coincidence? Possibly, but the results speak for themselves.

With general, non-towing, driving I can go for months without refilling the DEF tank. The truck uses the fluid very sparingly but DEF consumption definitely goes up when hauling a load. My guess is the '16 has emissions equal to or improved over my '14 so I wouldn't imagine you'll have any problems.
  • I would second the Dennis Dillon recommend. I just purchased a 2018 Bighorn with the Aisin and even ordered it and paid 56,333. For the 7 K that seems like a much better deal.
  • I highly suggest pricing the same truck NEW from Dennis Dillon or Dave Smith in Idaho. One BIGGIE is does it have the AISIN? If not that price is WAY out of line.

New truck get's you EXACTLY what you want and a full warranty. If financing a new truck most likely be a lesser interest rate.

To answer the question the 15's and newer have been VERY trouble free.
  • I've got a 2015 dually. It is a very comfortable truck. I've had the water pump and transmission interlock recalls done. The tailgate recall didn't include mine. It's a diesel so no problems on emissions and at least in TN it's exempt from testing because of its weight. If I were looking I think it would be a good truck.

Definitely on the high side, I would look at new for a 50K price tag, new would not be far off that.
  • As long as the recomended services and recalls have been done, and it was never deleted I would go for it. Check the carfax before you go.
