2017 f150 crew cab verses gmc Sierra 1500

I have ordered a new Jayco Whitehawk 27DSRL trailer. little over 6000 pounds empty with a max of 7500. 31 feet long with hitch weight of 685. Will be using weight distribution hitch.

Looking at both of the above vehicle. I have dropped out the RAM due to low Payload. Too bad because I really like it! Ford the 3.5 Ecoboost with the 10 speed and the GMC with either the 5.3 or 6.3 and the eight speed.

Any recommendations concerning one or the other? Anyone with this set up?

1/2 ton only, I want to fit in the garage. I want a good ride when no pulling since it will be my daily driver.

Thanks.

Steve

  • I'm very happy with the truck in my signature towing a scaled 8300lb/31 ft TT. However i feel it's at near max of it's capacity. Motor could handle much more though!
  • Either one properly equipped and you won't have any problem. I'm partial the 3.5 eco, it's served me well and I tow very similar weight and length. No issues in the 4 years so far through mountains and heavy traffic. Worst I had was a few weeks ago heading to Houston in 20-30 mph cross winds - don't know if any truck would have made much difference.
  • A 31' and 7500 lb TT? I'd reassess getting a half ton if I were you. The coil springs in the Ram ride really well with the tires aired down to 60 or so.

However, I have seen a lot of GM trucks with the NHT package with the 5.3

If money was no object and I had to have a half ton I would have a new LTZ Silverado with the NHT package and the 6.2 V8. 2,000 lbs payload, 12,000 lb tow rating. Nearly the perfect HD Half ton.

Or, look for a 6.2L in the LT model a couple years old. I know they were in the LT through at least the 2012 model and it is the best of the towing world for the ½T trucks. We love ours with the NHT package and I have comfortably towed 10K in Idaho and Nevada with it.
  • Go for either truck with the Max trailering package. For the GM it's called the NHT package. For the Ford it's the Max Tow with the Heavy Duty Payload Package.

If you want Ford then you will probably have to special order it because you hardly ever see a properly equipped F150 on the dealers lot.

JMHO ... I love the Ford trucks but the new F150 doesn't feel as planted to me as the Silverado.

    Thanks!

  • From what I have seen those trucks are pretty equal in real world applications. Personally, I have been a fan of Ford all my life till I stumbled upon a great deal on a Suburban. Turns out Chevy's are great. Who knew?
