It works on the same concept as a rubber torsion trailer axle to dampen up and down movement of the tongue. As smooth as our TT tows, I see no need for any such thing. A properly loaded trailer may porpoise a little, but other than an empty U-Haul trailer on a rough road, I've never experienced any up and down jarring motion. A slimmer wallet is probably easier on the back though.
And you probably need to keep your back in good shape to be able to pick up that hitch and put it on your truck.
