As I recall commercial trucks are required to carry chains most of the year but actual use is dependent on road condition. They were just showing some of what it takes to be legal when running with a commercial license. I think that the signs read September through May for carrying chains. I came through in late November and the roads were clear. I was lucky. Living in souther TN I don't own chains for anything, certainly not for the motorhome I was driving and that thing uses steering tires all the way around so snow traction would have been awful. About 2 days later there was a heavy snow that really gummed things up there. The wheel clearance on the motorhome is so tight that I don't think it could use chains regardless.
