If these 10 spds are like the 8 sp auto trans in MB's. At least the ones My wife has brought home as loaner for her ML, they do not always start in 1st gear. I've only found them using first when on a grade in the min 10% grade range. The hill I know it is used, might be steeper, more in the mid teen range.
With that said, a 12% grade in the tow test, is a pretty minor grade! Altho 1.5x steeper than a max on an Interstate.....still not that steep.

As an aside.... I read where many/most 1/2 ton 4 wheel drives are now all wheel drive. No transfer case, and no low range..... This is something that SHOULD be talked about on this forum to bring up the awareness. Back when I towed with a 1/2 ton, low range was certainly used quite a bit when jockeying into a campsite.
Huntindog is Wrong as usual. Most .5 tons have a typical transfer case with a low range. Even one equipped with all wheel drive technically have a transfer case.
I don't know where you get this stuff from.
Easy now Fish. I read it in one of the many links posted on this forum about the new trucks.
The writer was glad that the HDs still had two speed transfer cases, and were not following the trend of the 1/2 tons going to AWD. Said that you needed to get a Z71 to get a two speed transfer case. I did not fact check the author as I have zero interest in 1/2 tons,,, but it would not surprise me at all if it were true.
If I run into the link again, I will post it up.
