If these 10 spds are like the 8 sp auto trans in MB's. At least the ones My wife has brought home as loaner for her ML, they do not always start in 1st gear. I've only found them using first when on a grade in the min 10% grade range. The hill I know it is used, might be steeper, more in the mid teen range.
With that said, a 12% grade in the tow test, is a pretty minor grade! Altho 1.5x steeper than a max on an Interstate.....still not that steep.

As an aside.... I read where many/most 1/2 ton 4 wheel drives are now all wheel drive. No transfer case, and no low range..... This is something that SHOULD be talked about on this forum to bring up the awareness. Back when I towed with a 1/2 ton, low range was certainly used quite a bit when jockeying into a campsite.
Huntindog is Wrong as usual. Most .5 tons have a typical transfer case with a low range. Even one equipped with all wheel drive technically have a transfer case.
I don't know where you get this stuff from.
Chevy's newest 1/2 ton has a 4wd model that has no low range.
"It is disappointing that a basic four-wheel-drive Silverado doesn’t have the low-range gearing needed for serious off-roading duties. But it does have a “lock” feature that sends equal power to all four wheels to help get the truck out of challenging, slippery situations, such as through mud or a loose-gravel incline. We like that the four-wheel-drive system has an Auto mode that can be left engaged indefinitely. Off-road enthusiasts must look to the Z71 Off-Road package or Trail Boss models for the necessary rock-crawling hardware."
