When we bought our 2012 Yukon XL I searched hard to find one with the optional tow package because it added two things to the truck...the 3.42 axle and two speed transfer case. While we owned that truck I only used 4 low one or twice at the most. The number of times I needed it was none.
Last summer when we replaced that truck with the 2017 Suburban I was fine going with the standard one speed transfer case with the auto mode considering how little I used 4 low in the previous truck. I also decided we would never tow anything that required the 3.42, so there was little reason to not go with the 3.08.
Maybe it’s just now making its way to pickups, but on the SUV’s GM has been doing this since at least 2010.
