Lots on B series Cummins in boats. In a boat the engine is always under load(think going up hill). The Cummins RPM rating for max cruise is 200 RPM below the max engine RPM and allows for running full max RPM's for something like 5 out of 24 hour period. Example my two B150's were rated for 2800 RPM Max and 2600 max cruise RPM, and allowed for running them at 2800 RPM for 5 out of 24 hours of continuous use.
In a diesel boat to determine if it is prop'd(think geared) correctly, you go out with a nice clean bottom and run it to the firewall and max RPM obtained should be the manufacturer's max RPM rating. If you turn over that amount you need more prop and if under you have to much prop.
