20lb Horizontal Propane Tank out of date....

So, my 12+ year old Truck Camper has an out of date horizontal propane tank that cannot be refilled legally. I'm aware that you can have them recertified for a 5 year extension but no one in my area does this. One welding supply will ship it off for a $40 fee. Online prices I have found are $180+ :E Anyone found a cheaper source?
  • My propane supplier did a leak test by filling tanks and spraying soapy water on it.
    That's it.
Mine don't even have the OPD fitting cause they grandfathered them out
of the law for those made before 1998 because they weren't made for them.
    It's in their manual.

He even copied the part from the manual and laminated it for me.

So, you want your tank re-certified for a price less than $40 when buying a new tank is $140+? What am I missing?
  • When I was in college I helped my father-in-law hydrostatic test tanks. Now retired I began to wonder who did these tests now. I asked our local propane provider and all he said was, for get it, if you find someone it will cost you more than buying a new tank. That's all I learned on the topic recently.
