I was fortunate enough to a have 1800 pound hitch without WD rating that came stock on my truck. I use a 36" extension on my boat and have had no problems. I have hauled the boat thousands of miles and have seen no signs of problems on the hitch. I had a local welder make the extension for me. My boats tongue weight is in the 300 pound range.
