I went to "my" welder who specializes in hitches. He also fabricated our Class C custom hitch for me about 10 years ago and also our car hitch.
We worked through a design and he is going to fabricate an extension for me next week. It'll be a 2" tube extension made of 1/4 steel with two support arms bolted back to the original hitch on either side.
After we met, I thought maybe he could also add a third arm on top ... connected to the receiver sleeve at the one end and the "bumber ball" mount on the truck. That might offer a degree of vertical stability ... not necessarily strength.
He said he will make it MTO (your DOT) compliant and good for a 350 lbs. tongue weight. Knowing him, he always over engineers and overbuilds things so I'm confident he can pull it off ... he has 30 years exeperience.
I'll post a pic when it's finished.
