I agree there is the perfect rim width for every tire width, however millions (probably) of tires that are a little wide for the rims have been used successfully.
Proper inflation pressure to gain the right contact patch goes a long way with tire life as well. Becoming more difficult with the tire nannys now, TPMS.
If it was dangerous to mount a 12" wide tire on an 8" wide rim I'd be dead by now. My setup with the big ole AF camper drove all over Canada and AK with 295 tires on 17x8 rims. Maybe they were 17x9.
