I agree the major concern is over loading the receiver. My Wildwood has a UVW of 5800 lbs, Dry TW of 815 lbs, and GVWR of 7815. I have dual 6V batteries and the 2 20 lb tanks of propane on the tongue. We put a lot in the front storage, which is quite large. Water tank is over the axles and is usually full and the black and gray tanks are behind the rear axles. My TW weighed by my Sherline scale is 1200-1300 lbs when loaded. This is one reason I went with an older Suburban, I was able to install a Reese Titan with plenty of capacity, it made the factory hitch I took off look like a toy in comparison, no joke. There is twice the steel on the Titan compared to the OEM hitch (which was rated for 1500 lbs TW with WD). The rest of the vehicle is adequate and sometimes I wish I had a newer vehicle and certainly the better fuel economy. My 8.1L gets 12 mpg on a good day and 10 mpg in normal empty not towing driving. 7.5 mpg towing. If I were in your shoes, I'd look to see if there are any custom hitch manufacturers around. There is a place near here I would go and they are primarily a welding shop, but make custom hitches and snow plow mounts as well, maybe there is someplace equivalent near you. Searching for hitch suppliers is not often successful. Either beef up the current hitch or maybe just build a new one that mounts under the current hitch and mounts better to the frame and further up the frame towards the axle. The hard part would be finding a good shop with the experience and willingness to back it up.
