$3K seems very high to me. I had a 2002 1/2 ton Chevy pick up with a 3.08 non-locking rear axle. I had a local shop change gears from 3.08 to 3.73 and add an Eaton G80 Locking differential. Total cost was $870 Plus tax.
My work was done 7-8 years ago and parts for a 3/4 ton are probably more expensive than my 1/2 ton, but $3k still seems very high to me.
