Having had many Eagle Ford oilfield customers and working many years driving around to see them everyday, I have probably only seen a 1 ton tow more than 20k less then a handful of times. Most loads over that are moved by medium and heavy duty trucks with a CDL driver since towing a trailer over 26,001 lbs in Texas and most states requires one.
I don't think GM is in any HP/TQ wars like Ford and Ram are. They have only increased output with every new version(like most things that get updated) and not year over year like Ram and Ford seem to be doing.
Don't get me wrong. I would probably never own a GM product either, but my bias against owning one does not trump what I think is a good or bad decision. I can also like one decision while disliking another. What I think is good or bad does not change depending on the company that makes it.
