I use low range in my truck all the time - but don't lock the hubs but rarely. It's that extra gearing I find handy. Low speed maneuvering, especially in reverse, is much easier in low range. Do you have an automatic tranny and have to back up with heavy loads behind the truck? Your tranny will thank you for using low range! Manual transmission? No need to slip the clutch when inching backwards.
Boy howdy on that..When they got rid of granny gear in 4 speeds,it was a sad day indeed..
I once was trying to pull a 35ft Jayco fifth wheel up out of a camping spot with a 390 Ford and 3.73 gears..I powered out with an A/T and had to cut a tree down and pull my Chevy Corsica in front of the pickup and give it a tow..It gave just enough to get my truck up out of that hole..
Granny gear or 4X4 low would have done the same.
