I carry firewood in mine because that's what I do in the summer months..Others do rocks/dirt/gravel etc just like where you came from..Living in McCall Idaho and 1/2 the town with 2WD,a lot of them liked the Volkswagon 2WD with the engine over the drivers..It got around great also in the snow..
As you said..Weight is your friend as well as tires and the knowledge to get around in the snow..
