4WD adds $400 to the price of a new vehicle and you will get that back out in resale value when you sell it.
I completely agree with the benefits of 4WD, but I think your numbers are wrong. Build a new 2015 F150 Platinum on the Ford web site and the price difference is $3425 going from 2WD ($50,960) to 4WD ($54,385).
X2 If it only cost and additional $400 everyone would have it.
:S
Yep, most people do not have any idea that the 4x4 option adds thousands of dollars to your purchase price. They do not give it to you for free!
Another well overlooked part of this is what it does to your payments and the extra interest you will pay on the loan for the 4x4 option..
$3425 for 5 yr loan will add an extra $63.85 to your monthly payment and you will pay an extra $406.14 at 4.5% in interest to the life of the loan.
That $3425 "option" actually will cost you $3831.14 not including any other MANDATORY OPTION PACKAGES which the manufacturer will deem needed in order to add 4x4 to your order..
Insurance is also another overlooked item, insurance rates are typically based on the purchase price of said vehicle. That option will cost you more for insurance over the life of your vehicle..
Cost of fuel.. well typically 4x4 can be counted on in decreasing your mileage 1MPG to 2MPG over the life of owning the vehicle this can be a staggering cost..
Reduced payload, yep, the 4x4 option weighs more which cuts into your payload something on the order of 500 lbs-600 lbs.. less payload when compared to a 4x2..
Resale is flat out funny.. With 4x4 you PAID MUCH MORE UP FRONT, you better darn well you get a small pittance back when you attempt to unload it.. You will however never get the FULL PURCHASE PRICE OF 4X4 OPTION BACK when selling or trading it in..
Most folks who have 4x4 will only engage it ONCE during the entire life of the truck, some will use it a few times and even less will use it nearly 100% of the time..
Buy it if you want it or need it, those who get along fine for years without it then you most likely really don't need it..
I would recommend no matter which way you go, GET THE ELECTRONIC LOCKING AXLE OPTION! The locker really makes a huge difference and is well worth the cost.
