my first two trucks were 2wd's and got stuck so many times it would make your head spin. I guess it really depends on your type of driving and camping. we did a lot of dry camping in our day and got into some rough country where 4wd got us out of trouble. we have stayed in camp grounds where we had to back up a hill to get to our camp site. with a 35 ft TT and loose gravel we would not have made it if not for our 4wd truck. Iwe have rough winters here in eastern Oregon and a 4wd saved us many times. in fact we have been woken up at 4 in the morning by police ans strangers that see we have a 4wd to pull them out of snow drifts. we never used to have our street plowed until a policeman woke us up to pull him out of the snow and make tracks for him to follow out of here. every year since the street dept plows and gravels our hill to allow police to follow their rounds at night. we will never be without a 4wd ever again
