When we parked the motorhome and lived in a fifth wheel for 2 years, my son and I bought a 4X2 standard cab dually Dodge Ram 3500 CTD for me to pull the fiver with.
I never got stuck on loose sand, wet grass, snow or mud.
After we settled in one place, and bought a couple of horses, I hauled hay with the dually. 35 bales on the truck, and 100 bales on a flatbed trailer. Again, never got stuck; in and out of farmyards (in empty, out loaded with hay).
I hauled an eleven foot Caribou camper on it, and towed a Jeep Wrangler. Never got stuck, even when going to USFS back country campgrounds
Yep, even drove it through a couple of Montana winters, no problem.
I drove it down a couple of skid trails in the mountains once. I decided it was simply too big for that kind of foolishness.
Then, I gave it to my son and got a Dodge 1500 4X4. Not enough power, so I sold it and bought the truck in my sig. It is great, but it doesn't have a limited slip differential like the old 4X2 did. It is pretty much helpless this time of year, even with weight in the back.
I have come to the conclusion that a limited slip diff is just as or maybe more important than four wheel drive!
Ultimately, 4X4 or 4X2 is a very personal decision. You must make up your own mind. Good luck finding a 4X2, though. They are mighty scarce!
