It seems to me, if you believe that 4X4 is an absolute necessity where you live, you are absolutely right!
If you believe that you can get by just fine with a 4X2, and have for years, you are absolutely right!
The bottom line is, there is no "one-size-fits-all" answer.
I noticed something yesterday on the way out of the lane. Last winter, if I stopped at the blacktop, I would have to back off and get a run at it to get un the pavement, or put it in four wheel drive. This year, with new and better traction tires, no problem. It is worthy of note that the truck has an open differential.
Last year I plowed my driveway and most of the lane before I noticed that the ATV was in two wheel drive.
Many of us grew up driving rear wheel drive open differential cars and trucks. We know quite well how it goes. We survived.
