30 day trip out West - Dare we without reservations?

I am in the early stages of planning a family trip West for June 2014. We will have 30 travels days. It will be my wife, two sons (7/11) and our dog. It would be nice to camp as we travel so we...

With that small a rig I'd only make reservations for three day holiday weekend. We do three month out West without any reservations, but we do not try and find a site for a big rig on Friday afternoon. Wing it.
There is a USFS CG before the gate for the North Rim plus one at Jacob's Lake. The store/cafe at Jacob's Lake is NOT a rip off.
Plan on coming out of the N Rim at dusk so you can see 100+ mule deer.
