30 lb vs. 20 lb propane tanks

The PUs that I owned many years ago all had single 20 lb propane tanks. When I bought my first TT in 2006, it had two 30 lb tanks. When I bought my new TT recently, it has two 20 lb tanks, even though it is a much bigger unit.

I'm curious why it seems that most manufacturers have decreased the size of the propane tanks. I can think of a few reasons, but was curious what your take is on this:

1) Newer TT hot water heaters can run off electric and not just propane.

2) Weight considerations

3) Space considerations on the tongue

4) Furnaces are more efficient?

5) 20 lb tanks can be interchanged at Home Depot/Lowes/etc

6) Cost

  • I considered dropping down to 20# tanks when I had to replace my 30's a year or so ago. Capacity would still be plenty for me, and it would make it easier to exchange instead of fill the tanks. In the end I decided to just buy new 30#ers and keep it the way it is. But 20 would work just fine too. I'm not sure who out there really NEEDS 30# tanks, it does cut down on the number of trips to the propane store, but even one tank full is enough for the longest of my personal cold weather trips. But I'm just a weekend warrior type.

Anyway, to your list, I'd put my money squarely on #6.
  • Seems like the trailers trying to be as lightweight as possible and/or entry level pricing are going to the 20lb tanks. Others are sticking with the 30lb.

don't think furnaces or WH are any more efficient than in the past, but more campgrounds have electric hookup so it does give the option for electric for the water and a small electric heater.

Also, how many people camp for several weeks at a time w/o access to someplace to refill propane, or camp in really cold weather??

Maybe they are responding to changing in camping style as well.

If we dry camp in the early spring or late fall, the furnace is the biggest propane user, and even then a single 30lb tank will last us 7+ nights along with the WH, fridge, stove and oven. so a pair of 20lb would suffice for that.
  • You maybe should have put your number six as number one, and then yes, all of the others too.
