This. Love reading about how guys turn their 3/4 ton into an 1 ton with $20 worth of parts from Harbor Freight or what-not.
Hilarious to see what people drag into campgrounds...
You are aware that for many years of recent trucks, the difference between a 3/4 ton and a 1 ton was mostly minor parts, right? The F250 was the EXACT SAME as the F350, expect the F350 had a 1 inch spacer block and possibly an overload spring. I say possibly because I believe you could order the F250 with that additional overload spring.
Same engine, transmission, front and rear axles, wheels, brakes, brake line, braking system, frame, lugs, tires shocks, etc. So literally for a little bit more than $20 you could make your F250 into an F350.
I believe the same went for the GM and Ram 2500 and 3500 series for quite a while. I knew that the new Ram's have bigger differences between the 2500 and 3500. The rear suspension system is much more different. My 2500 has rear coils (they offer optional rear air), whereas the 3500 has standard leaf suspension and optional air/overload leaf suspension. You can also get the Aisin trans in the 3500 (the standard trans is the 68RFE in 2500 and 3500 Rams). Other than that, the Ram 2500 and 3500 are identical. Same brakes, axles, wheels, etc etc. So you could supplement the rear suspension on a 2500 and have the EXACT SAME tow and carrying capacity as a 3500. Again... for a couple dollars worth of add on parts.
Obviously if buying new and you want the higher payload and tow ratings, but a 1 ton. But if you are buying used, the 3/4 tons are WAY easier to find. And while all the upgrades in the world won't change what your VIN or door sticker says, you are foolish if you don't think that a properly modified 3/4 ton is every bit as capable as a 1 ton. No "safety" issues, no "legal" issues.
