The power button is the larger knob on the left. I have never tried to turn mine off so I don't know what the screen should look like. I read a few posts on GM-Trucks and they say that the clock will be visible.
I found this on the GMC web site. Sounds like your system may muted rather than off.
When off, press O to turn the system on. Press and hold to turn off.
When on, press O to mute the
system. Press O again to unmute the system.
